DR Trip | Day 2

20 Apr

Where did we leave off yesterday? Oh yeah, we found out that my last name Paulino actually came from my Great Great Grand Mother and not from my Great Great Grand Father.

Now, with that piece of information the quest becomes figuring out who my GGGM was, and more importantly who her parents were.

The first clue we had is that she had my Great Grand Father in 1893 but my Grand Father was born in 1931 and he told me yesterday by the time he was born she had already passed away. So we have a 1893-c.1931 window to look at Cementery registries and try to find out the year she passed away so that way we could then, with a name and a year, request a Death Certificate at the Civil Office.

PhotoBooth Palooza | Erin’s Bday

26 Jul

I first met Erin over ten years ago on one of my first trips to Florida.  By then, Tracy and I were dating, I was styling an afro, okay maybe not quite a ‘fro’. . .but the idea is that things were different back then.  Erin is a beautiful girl with Down Syndrome who has been close to my wife’s family, and so when we knew they were throwing a party for her 30th birthday of course we had to be a part of it.

Food to my Soul | Top 20 List

12 Jun

The other day I was having coffee with one of my favorite couples ever, Joe and Jamie. We chatted a little bit about everything, from textile business to churches in South Florida. When we touched on SoFlo I couldn’t help, but express how much I absolutely LOVE this area. The people, races, languages, food, fashion, music, traffic, scenery, beaches, whether and of course Cubans! Cubans and Dominicans share a common history of struggles, freedom, and pride. Whenever I interact with Cubans it just feels like home.

CrossCultural Love | Rebeca & Roy

25 Dec

IMG_0034

This particular relationship is very special to me.  Both, Rebeca and Roy, are  Young Life staff, both love the Lord, and both are great people to be around.  There’s only one little detail… He’s an American living in the Dominican Republic and she’s a Latina living in Guatemala.  The solution? L O V E.

Rumor has it they met a couple of summers ago, but it wasn’t until summer of 09 when butterflies started stirring up love.  After that summer a bunch of emails, Skype, phone conversations, and always-too-short visits followed.  But on December 19th 2010, all the waiting was over… it was time to tie the knot!

Guatemala Wedding | The Trip II (unedited)

20 Dec

12/20 10:50am. Since the public transportation driver turned off the engine and I find myself waiting in traffic on my way from Antigua Guatemala to the airport I think it’ll be a good time to do some jotting down.

The radio is paying “baby” by Justin Bieber in the background, the bus is getting hotter and I have half my butt on a sit and the other half just hanging. Classic ;-) I first meant to write a little bit each day as if in a documentary type of writing, but the truth is that ever since my arrival to Guate (as the locals refer to the capital) everything, and I mean everything has been an experience after another.

Guatemala Wedding | The Trip | (unedited)

16 Dec

12/15 9:10pm. As I’m watching the Heat vs. Cavs and Knicks vs. Celtics (I know I’m such a NBA junky), it started to hit me that I was flying out to Guatemala in a matter of hours. All of the sudden I started thinking I’m known for forgetting – clothes, passports, contact solution, & cash. My reaction? I downloaded an iPhone app to remind me of all these things and kept watching the game.

Yacht Wedding | Micky & Dave

26 Nov

“Oh, and this wedding is 0n a yacht!” With those words I hung up the phone after talking with my second shooter Joe Don, and immediately we started getting ready for this one.  This particular wedding came via The Pros, which is an awesome wedding professional service company that has been highly awarded by The Knot, and Best Bride Choice Awards among others. Unlike shooting weddings “on land”, the set-up, expectations, and lighting get a little rockier (pun intended) when the wedding takes place on a boat.

Jillian’s School Play

26 Nov

This past Monday, Tracy and I were invited to see Jillian’s ThanksGiving presentation.  We believe attending these little events makes a difference plus, we get a kick seeing our kiddos growing up before our eyes. The whole presentation lasted about an hour, and yes Jillian’s part was towards the VERY end, so Tracy stayed back with the bottom three (Stella, Chloe, & Claire) while I snuck in the back and sat pretty much right behind Jillian for a better shot.

Rock the River

24 Oct

IMG_0218This past Thursday, October 21st, the Spanish River High School’s WSRH-TV and Gibson Guitars presented Rock the River in Boca Raton, FL.  For this event nine bands gathered to offer their music and stage presence for about three hours.  Local bands and artists Wing It, Celestial Sound, Fourth and Ten, Alaska, Dead Bang!, The Funky Nuggets, and Brett Lowenstern led the first part of the event while Amber Leigh Band and The Reprieve closed out the event.

Amber Leigh at Boston’s

10 Oct

Yesterday afternoon at Boston’s on the Beach I had the opportunity to document an awesome fundraiser for a teacher at Spanish River High School. The main attraction for this event was Amber Leigh.

At only 23, Amber has been in the music industry for over a decade, produced 4 records, and opened for Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears among others. Needless to say, Amber, alongside her band, was just awesome!

Turtles aren’t Mexican

08 Oct

First of all let me say upfront that this post has absolutely nothing to do with me, faith, or photography.  It’s all about my backyard snapping turtles.  That being said, here is the story:

So I guess I had too much time in my hands and decided to see if the snapping turtles from my backyard liked Mexican Nachos.  I know, kind of juvenile, but oh well.  With that in mind I grabbed my GoPro HD HERO Digital Camera , the GoPro “rod” and attached a string to the camera housing holding a nacho chip on the other side.

My Top SUMMER Books

31 Aug

That’s right.  It is time to say good-by to summer.  This past summer I had the opportunity to interact, wrestle, and learn from a wealth of books. Thanks in part to my seminary reading load, but also out of personal motivation and perhaps plain old curiosity.  Most of the books I present in this carousel can be downloaded as an e-format and therefore you can always carry them with you (as I do), and read them on your Kindle/iPad/Computer.

49 Seconds

28 Aug

Keeping up a website isn’t as laid back as some people, aka me, wishes. A good webmaster regularly checks the “data” behind the page. This data consists in how many visitors have viewed your site, how many of those were first timers, how long did they stay, what did they click, where are they from and so forth.

I kind of go through spurts in which I check those numbers every day, or just forget about them and let months pass before checking in. Lately I’ve been paying close attention to this information. In fact I just ran an eight month analysis on how long the average “viewer” stays on my site. The answer? 49 seconds. That’s it.

Internet Porn Stats

19 Jun

Pornography has been traded online since the 1980’s, even in the form of ASCII art, and then, with the rise of the world wide web in the 1990’s, adult webistes began springing up everywhere. Here are the figures for the enormous world of internet pornography

Top 3 Myths to Avoid as Short-Term Missionary in Latin America

20 May

One of the little surprises I’ve encountered while living in Dublin, GA is that there’s a strong connection between local churches and missions in Latin America.  Each year there are medical missions, students and construction groups that travel to Mexico, Dominican Republic, other Latin American countries, and most recently Haiti, with the purpose of lending a helping hand.
